We went to Italy our first time with Trafalgar Tours. I think it was in 2009. We started at the top of Italy and went to the bottom, hitting all the highlights such as Venice, Rome, and Capri. It was great except Trafalgar likes to wait until the tour has started and then offer options to you that you can’t resist. It was all worth it! Florence Italy is very romantic at night, especially on that famous bridge …
The second time we went to Italy was in 2011. We went with 10 friends and rented a villa in the countryside just outside the city limits of Volterra Tuscany. This was extra wonderful!
Volterra is a Etruscan medieval town about 45 minute south of Pisa and Florence and about 30 minutes east of the Mediterannean Sea. It has been inhabited since the 5th century and is on top of a rock mini mountain. It has a wall around it and an unused Roman amphitheatre.
The village we rented with 10 friends for a month (October), was about 2 miles below Volterra in a beautiful Tuscan valley. The village had enough bedrooms and bathrooms for 10 people. It couldn’t have been more perfect. The countryside was as you would imagine and not far from Florence and unique Tuscan villages such as San Gimigano.
If you are ever in the neighbourhood of San Gimignano, go for the best gelato in the world, at least that’s why I think and thousands of others.
We drove a few times down to the Mediterranean for a swim. It took about 30 minutes and was spectacular!
